Fraser McConnell had a brilliant start to the 2023/24 Nitrocross season with a win in the first event at the MidAmerica Outdoor complex in Oklahoma last Friday and Saturday.

McConnell set the pace from early in the event by clocking the fastest time in the Timed Practice but missed out on the coveted Top Qualifier title when his childhood hero Travis Pastrana edged him by fractions of a second.

The Jamaican’s strong performance continued through the event with a second-place finish in the Battles Final. He went on to win his heat which secured him pole position for the start of the final.

McConnell was fastest off the line and led the race from the green light to the chequered flag. The final, however, wasn’t easy going for him as his teammate and last year’s champion Robin Larson was right beside him in corner one and then there was a late challenge from World Rally icon Kris Meeke. However, McConnell remained focused and calm to cross the finish line with a decisive win in the 2023 curtain-raiser.

On the top step of the podium, Fraser collected the first place trophy from none other than Ultimate Fighting Championship’s Dana White who leads a group of investors who have purchased the NitroCross brand.

“This win in Oklahoma has been a perfect start to this new season. The track was incredibly challenging but fun to drive and very exciting for the spectators. I am grateful for the outstanding work from my team and the continued support of my sponsors,” said an elated McConnell.

After the first event, Fraser leads the 10-event championship with 76 points, 11 clear of Kevin Eriksson and 12 ahead of Robin Larson.

McConnell will compete next in Sardinia, Italy, on July 8-9 with Sir Lewis Hamilton’s X44 Vida Carbon Racing Team. The next NitroCross event will be in Salt Lake City, Utah, on August 18-19.
