Excelsior, STATHS stay perfect

EXCELSIOR HIGH School stayed perfect to keep pace with St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS) in Group D of the ISSA Manning Cup after contrasting wins yesterday.
Excelsior turned back third-place Bridgeport 2-0 at Dunbeholden field, with goals from Richards Andrews and Dante Bert in each half, respectively, while STATHS dismissed Cedar Grove 7-0 for their fourth win from four games.
Excelsior were faced with a more difficult task against third-place Bridgeport but coach Keon Brodrick said his boys did the business to set up an enticing top-of-the-table clash against the 1987 Manning Cup finalists, STATHS on Saturday.
“We are thankful for the three points. This will allows us to stay close with St Andrew Technical,” Brodrick told The Gleaner.
Nevertheless, he believes they could have been better in front of goal and in possession.
“We could have done much better with the chances we got. I don’t think we controlled the game as best as we could but the field did not allow us to control the game as we would like because of the bumpy surface.
“But credit must be given to the boys for the way they applied themselves. We are thankful for the points. But we will be back again on Saturday and we are expecting a tough game from STATHS,” he said.
Both team are locked on 12 points, with STATHS holding the advantage with a plus-26 goal difference compared to Excelsior’s plus-18.
Bridgeport are third with six points, while Clan Carthy beat Tarrant 1-0 to, leaving both tied on three. Cedar Grove are at the bottom of the group without a point.
