KC clip Charlie with Broomfield strike

THE VASSELL Reynolds-coached Kingston College (KC) are atop Group A in the ongoing ISSA/Digicel Manning Cup with a 1-0 victory over Charlie Smith at Calabar High School yesterday.
Armani Broomfield’s 76th-minute strike proved the all-important statistic.
KC’s Kelvin Brown was presented with the best chance of the first half but failed to convert, Charlie Smith’s custodian Deonte Gray intervening.
Ten minutes into the second half, the match was halted by approximately one hour and 37 minutes because of the presence of lightning and heavy rain.
Following the resumption, the teams traded chances but failed to score. Brown was again in the thick of things but saw a very presentable chance soar high over the Charlie Smith goal.
Eight minutes later, Charlie Smith’s Kevaughn Gayle was gifted with a clear chance but KC’s Dominic Robinson foiled the one-on-one opportunity.
Broomfield would eventually break the deadlock, capitalising on a goalkeeping error to hand KC a 1-0 lead and the three points.
According to Reynolds, a lengthy stoppage in play, on account of rain, proved beneficial.
“We figured out that this game was critical to us and we needed the three points. What the guys showed in the last 25 minutes really showed that the stoppage of the game didn’t have a negative impact on us,” said Reynolds.
Reynolds, who is in his first year as head coach of KC, is looking forward to the rest of the season because the team has more to give.
“The victory now gives us a little cushion but I still feel the team has something more in them. I think they’re capable of playing much better, and the fact that we’ve not hit 90 per cent as yet, based on that, I think we may have achieved a little bit more than what I thought we would have at this point,” Reynolds added.
The Calabar vs Hydel fixture, set for the same venue, was postponed because of lighting issues.
