Top seed progresses at Downy Tennis Classic

THE SEMI-FINALS of the Downy Tennis Classic will serve off today at 8 a.m. as action continued on Saturday’s second day at the Half Moon Resort tennis courts.

Number-one seed David Goldsmith was in a ding dong battle with Andre Burrell in the Men’s Open quarter-final. However, he was able to carve out a 6-2, 6-7, 10-8 tiebreaker under lights late in the evening to win and move into the final four.

Goldsmith had earlier taken care of Kristoff Grizzle 6-0, 6-1 and is looking imperious heading into today’s final four.

“It was a tough match for me today and things changed in the second set when Andre took a medical time out with the set locked at 3-3, but I was able to serve and volley well to come away with the victory.”

Up to sports time, the other quarter-final encounters on the men’s side were still in progress, with number-four seed Macoy Malcolm engaging number-five seed Matthew Rodriquez.

Number-three seed Jeremy Miller was hoping to oust number-six seed Nicholas Chung, while number-two seed Dwayne Pagon was being challenged by number-eight seed Steffon Rumble.

The ladies’ amateur quarter-final saw Kemi Richardson getting by Helena Parkinson 6-2, 6-2, while former World Champion hurdler Brigitte Foster-Hylton was leading 6-2 and 3-1 against Marie Imbault when rain stopped play.

Number-one seed Maurine Williams easily advanced from her quarter-final after Simone Hudson retired, with the former leading 7-6.
