Jamaica’s head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson has admitted that he is open to having out-of-favour England and former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood in the Reggae Boyz set-up despite his obvious troubles.

Greenwood has endured a difficult 21 months after he was arrested on suspicion of assaulting his girlfriend.

On October 2022, he was charged for attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and controlling and coercive behaviour.

However, in February of this year, the charges were dropped. Despite this, he was, basically, forced out of Manchester United as the club was bombarded with protests from various women’s rights and social groups, and the club succumbed to the pressure.

In September, the player left the club on loan to Getafe in Spain. However, despite the player’s troubles, Hallgrimsson is not opposed to having the 22 year-old, who has been approached by Jamaica in the past.

“I don’t think I am different from all coaches in the world. We would like to have the best talent on our teams.

“If he (Greenwood) gets his former fitness and his former level, that level could help Jamaica, and all coaches would want to have good players in their team and we are no different,” he told a press conference on Friday at the Jamaica Football Federation head office.

Though unsure of the reception the player would get from Jamaica fans, Hallgrimsson admitted that he wouldn’t mind having his qualities at his disposal.

“Of course, he will come with some baggage, but it is premature to talk about players that are not here. But whatever happens will happen. I want the best players with the best abilities playing for my team,” the Reggae Boyz coach said.

Greenwood was born in Bradford, England. His father, Andrew, has Jamaican roots.
