The Jamaican/Canadian boxing twins, Chann and Trevor Thonson, whose father is a Jamaican, are making steady progress in their careers, and both of them scored impressive victories recently.

Chann, who became a professional boxer first, now has an impressive 15-0 record, with 11 knockout victories. Trevor, who delayed turning pro because he wanted to get to the last Olympics, a bid that was torpedoed by the COVID-19 pandemic, is now 9-0, with eight knockout victories.

In his last fight on September 5, Chann defeated Russian Nikolai Buzolin by technical knockout at 1.35 of the third round in Nashville, Tennessee, while Trevor scored a victory on points over experienced Willie Shaw (with a 14-6 record), in an eight-round contest in Plant City, Florida, on October 4. It was the first time that any of his fights went the distance.

By virtue of his impressive victory over Buzolin and his unbeaten record, Chann has now been ranked at No. 10 in the lightweight division, 135 pounds, in the latest World Boxing Association (WBA) rankings. He is now, therefore, well poised to move into world title fight discussions.

HAPPY WITH PROGRESS

The twins told The Gleaner last Thursday that they were very happy with the progress that they are making in their careers and expressed the view that they both could be chasing world titles in a few years. Chann, who is in the forefront at this time, said he was very pleased with how things are going for him.

He is now the North American Boxing Federation champion and also holds the WBA Fedebol title. He is of the view that with a few more victories in the next six months, he could well get into the top-five in the World Boxing Association rankings and world title fight consideration. The reviews that he received from his last fight, when he stopped Buzolin, were excellent, he said, and this augurs well for his future. He plans to have his last fight for 2023 next month.

Trevor was also very optimistic and said that although his last fight went the distance, he was happy that it did because he got the opportunity to try some new things, and test his stamina in combat.

“It is always good to get rounds under your belt so as to test your stamina, and I really felt good after eight rounds,” he said.

He did make the point, however, that whenever a knockout opportunity presents itself in a fight, he was going to take it, and he did put the pressure on his opponent in the final round of their fight, with a knockout in mind.

He said that he plans to have one more fight this year and then looks forward to breaking into the top-10 in the lightweight division, like his twin brother, next year.
