EXCELSIOR HIGH School consolidated their place in the second round of the ISSA/Digicel Manning Cup with the 6-0 thrashing of Clan Carthy in Group D at Excelsior High School yesterday.

A brace from Orane Strawn and one each from Torrence Williams, Dontae Bert, Anthony Watson and Shadeko Wizard saw the Keon Brodrick-coached team to their seventh win in eight matches.

With St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS) all but assured of first place in the group as they sit six points clear at the top of the standings, Brodrick said the objective is to finish the first stage with as high a ranking as possible.

“It (win) is one step closer to the second round. Our objective is to climb up as much as possible in the ranking.

“The last time I checked we were 10th and I want us to move up as much as possible, so we can get one of the teams that we believe will be an easier match up for us,” he said.

Excelsior have two games to go, while St Andrew have one, and the Philip Williams-coached STATHS have shown no sign of letting up. With that in mind, Brodrick said he will use the two remaining matches to prepare for the next phase of the competition.

“If anything is possible, we can catch them (STATHS) but we are using these two games to prepare for the round of 16. So these are two important games going forward,” he said.

He added that although they should have scored more, scoring six was a satisfactory return nevertheless.

“Whenever you score six goals that is good and we got three points and more importantly, we got a clean sheet. We could have been more clinical in front of goal, but I am pleased with the 6-0. It could have been more, but it is a step in the right direction going into the round of 16. So I am happy with the progress.”

St Andrew lead the group on 27 points, with Excelsior second with 21 and Bridgeport are third on 12 points.
