Portmore on a roll in JPL
Philip Williams-coached team makes it three straight wins
Portmore United’s excellent start to the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) season continued at the Ferdie Neita Complex yesterday, with Chevaughn Walsh and Okelo Howard scoring on either side of the interval in a 2-0 win over Molynes United.
The result lifted Portmore to second in the table behind leaders Mount Pleasant with nine points from three successive wins.
Coach Philip Williams is delighted with how his team has responded to their opening-day defeat to defending champions Mount Pleasant.
“This is three wins from three games, so we are picking up momentum. We just want to keep going,” he said.
“It was a solid performance. We were good in all departments, and to win again at Ferdie Neita is good for us.
“Some games are going to be tough, some are going to be easy. But today, we stuck to the game plan, stayed patient and took our chances when they came.”
Both teams started well , and Jermie Nelson came very close to giving Molynes an early lead, but his rocket from 30 yards rattled the bar and came back into play.
Portmore then had good chances through Alex Marshall, Walsh and Howard, who all failed to capitalise.
However, the hosts took the lead in first half added time when Walsh picked up a pass from Martin Davis went past his marker and fired a low shot past Peter Harrison in goal.
Rodolph Austin came close to adding to Portmore’s lead from a corner after the break, but he could not keep his effort on target.
Nelson then had another great effort that crashed against the crossbar in the 63rd minute, but this time, from a freekick.
Howard then added a second in the 69th minute. Marshall sent a very good pass to Martin Davis, whose cross was tapped in by Howard.
The Molynes United bench declined to comment after the match. They are currently joint bottom of the standings with Lime Hall and Dundeholden on two points from five matches. Harbour View are also on two points.
