St Jago, Gaynstead stake unbeaten schoolgirl netball seasons

IN THE continued hunt for places in the semifinals of the ISSA Urban Schoolgirls Netball competition, two schools, St Jago High School and Gaynstead High School, will pit their unbeaten seasons against each other as the penultimate set of second-round games takes centre stage at the Leila Robinson Courts today.

The two meet in Group 1 at 1 p.m., on the back of six points from three wins. A win for either team puts them through to the semifinal.

St Jago have been the surprise package this season, boasting their best run in more than two decades.

The Dalton Hinds-coached Gaynstead team will provide St Jago with their toughest test yet.

In another important game in the group, Jose Marti meet St Hugh’s at 2 p.m. Both teams have lost one game and defeat today will put them out of semifinal contention.

Defending champions St Catherine look well set to make it four from four when they oppose the winless Campion College in their Group 2 match at 2 p.m. Like Gaynstead, the Phyllis Thompson-coached team has been very impressive and are odds on to top their group.

Norman Manley High will be hoping to remain unbeaten in the group and stay in touch with the defending champions when they take on Bridgeport at 2 p.m.

Since forfeiting their first game of the round to St Catherine, Bridgeport have racked up two straight wins and will be no pushovers.

In junior action, group leaders The Queen’s School, Jose Marti and Wolmer’s Girls look set to pick up their fourth wins.

In Group 1, Wolmer’s will meet St Jago at noon. In Group 2, joint leaders Queen’s will battle Norman Manley and Jose Marti will meet Jonathon Grant.
