Edwin Allen’s Godfrey, St Catherine’s Headley shine at Powell meet

EDWIN ALLEN High’s Class Four athlete Tashana Godfrey and Kitania Headley of St Catherine High, in Class One, were double winners at last Saturday’s Wesley Powell/Benjamins track and field meet at Excelsior High School.

Godfrey was impressive in winning both the 150 and 300 metres events in Edwin Allen’s first ever appearance at the meet. Godfrey clocked 19.92 seconds over 150m and was the only athlete in the class to go sub-20 seconds. Jowana Pennant (20.02) of St Andrew High and Mick-ka Gardener of Wolmer’s Girls (20.38) ended second and third overall.

In the 300m, Godfrey’s winning time of 44.98 was the only sub-45 seconds clocking in the class. Her teammate Rhiana Gayle with 45.95 and Wolmer’s Girls’ Ki -jauna Brown (46.21) were second and third overall.

Headley, who is expected to figure prominently in middle-distance events for her school in the upcoming season, was an easy winner in both the Class One 600m and 1000m. In the 600m, her winning time was 1:39.56 while in the 1000m, her time was 3:11.73.

Wolmer’s had some very good results at the meet. Natrice East topped the Class Three 150m in 19.45 ahead of teammate Asharie Creary (20.16) and Edwin Allen’ss Kerelle Etienne, 20.26.

East was second overall in the 300m in 44.14 as her teammate Ackelia Bell took top spot in 43.73 while Etienne was third in 44.38.

Tiana Marshall and Mickayla Gardener of Wolmer’s won their respective events.

Marshall won the Class Two 150m in 18.98 ahead of teammate Kaysia Sewell (19.23) and Excelsior’s Shakira Rhoden (19.53).

Gardener ruled supreme in the Class One 300m with a winning time of 42.10. St Catherine High’s Kacian Gordon (42.85) and Gardener’s teammate Hannah Coombs (43.21) ended second and third, respectively.

Excelsior’s Mikala Coombs topped the Class One 150m after clocking 19.14 seconds. Justine Royale of St Andrew High (19.32) was second ahead of with Kacia Johnson of St Catherine High (19.42).

Among the males, Demarco Bennett of Excelsior High stood out with double success. Competing in Class Two, he won the 300m in 36.73 and the 600m in 1:27.20.

Sr Jago High’s Raheem Pinnock topped the Class One 300m in 35.96 while his teammate Rushein Richards topped Class Three 300m in 37.79.

Kingston College’s Stephen Muturi captured the first event of the day after winning the 5000 metres Open in 17 minutes 50.01 seconds.

Other good performances on the day saw St Jago High’s Tajai Duffus winning the Class One 150m in 16.93 and his teammate Detarge Morgan capturing the Class Two 150m in 17.12.
