The sun-drenched shores of Makka Beach in St Thomas played host to the exhilarating spectacle of the Jamaica Surfing Championships where the Wilmot family showcased their prowess by claiming victory in multiple divisions.

In the highly anticipated men’s division final, Icah Wilmot emerged as the triumphant champion, securing a remarkable score of 15.74, going head-to-head with formidable opponent Elishama Beckford, who notched a commendable score of 15.40.

Wilmot’s fluid and powerful surfing style just barely set him apart despite a slow start, earning him the coveted title in a closely contested finale. He had earlier got the better of Ronald Hastings in the semifinal, while Beckford advanced over the wildcard entrant, Michael Panton, in the other semi.

For Icah Wilmot, the victory was pleasing following a less-than-stellar showing in the early stages.

“It was a really good competition as the waves were fun which pushed us to come out and do better. Each round was more intense and I had to put my best foot forward to come out on top because Shama was very good on the day.”

In the meantime, the women’s division witnessed Imani Wilmot surf her way to victory with a notable score of 10.83 in the final. Facing stiff competition, Wlimot got the better of Zoe Bain, who secured second place with a score of 3.90.

The longboard division unfolded with its share of excitement, as Ivah Wilmot claimed the title with a score of 13.27. Icah Wilmot, showcasing his versatility, secured second place with a score of 9.80. The Wilmot siblings’ dominance in this division highlighted their all-encompassing surfing talent.

In the masters over-40 division, Ishack Wilmot exhibited experience and skill, securing the title with a commendable score of 14.00.

Reflecting on the success of the event, Jamaica Surfing Association (JSA) President Inilek Wilmot expressed his satisfaction.

“We had a great event. The surfing community and the community of South Haven came together to make it a special event. The weather was good, and the waves were very good throughout the day in the five-to-eight-feet range.”

President Wilmot acknowledged the collaborative effort that made the event a success, emphasising the unity within the surfing community and the local support that contributed to the event’s special atmosphere. He added, “This was an excellent first step in re-establishing our Makka event, and we look forward to making it bigger and better next year.”
