Humble Lion looking to ‘young cubs’ to freshen up ageing squad
In the ever-evolving landscape of football, teams often find themselves at a crossroads where they must balance experience with youth to maintain competitiveness.
The Jamaica Premier League is no different, and Clarendon outfit Humble Lion are currently standing at such a juncture, with an ageing squad prompting strategic considerations ahead of the upcoming January transfer window.
Humble Lion’s roster currently boasts 10 players aged 30 and above, including seasoned veterans such as the 39-year-old Rafeik Thomas, 38-year-old Xavian Virgo, and 36-year-old Ricardo Campbell. Recognising the need for rejuvenation and a fresh injection of talent, the team’s management is eyeing promising young players to infuse vitality into their line-up.
Key prospects
A couple of key prospects on their radar are Central High School defender Zidane Christie as well as Rhajay Lewin, a central defensive midfielder. Mona High’s Donovan Harris is also expected to come into the fold.
Coach Andrew Price is optimistic about the infusion of youth into the team.
“When the January transfer window opens we expect to get some youthfulness in the team,” says Price. He emphasised the team’s commitment to nurturing young talent, mentioning the presence of enthusiastic youngsters from the daCosta Cup who have been actively participating in training sessions.
“We want to bring some of those youngsters into the team to bring some energy and spiritedness, which will blend with the experienced players that we already have here.”
The recruits have already had a taste of the action, having played a practice game against Phoenix Academy last Friday.
Humble Lion currently sit ninth in the league table with three wins, two draws, and three losses and during last Sunday’s loss to Arnett Gardens, there was talk among the fans about a possible coaching change as well come January.
When asked about that possible scenario, Price said: “I have not heard anything about that, but look, that is an occupational hazard.”
