SprinTec Track Club produced a memorable 4x100 metres performance at the Central Hurdles, Relays and Field Events meet last Saturday at the G.C. Foster College for Physical Education and Sport.

Oshane Bailey, Rasheed Dwyer, Brendan Rodney, and Kadrian Goldson combined to get the baton to the finish in 38.93 seconds, much to the delight of the many fans present.

Bailey, the 2010 Commonwealth Games 100m finalist, was solid and hit Dwyer, the 2021 Olympic 200 finalist, with a great pass, and Dwyer zoomed the second leg. As usual, Rodney flew around the curve. In a moment of uncertainty, Rodney, Canada’s 2022 4x100m World Champion third-leg runner, needed two tries to connect with Goldson, but in the end, all was well.

Goldson, the World Student Games 100m winner, was overjoyed. “Our target time today was 38. Mission accomplished.”

Then Rodney added, “I missed Kadrian’s hand on my first one, but maybe you didn’t see it, so I’ve got to clean that up for somebody who has multiple medals at the highest level, so I’ve got to go back, get down on myself and get it together, but you know, it’s good for the first race.”

World Championships 100m semi-finalist Shashalee Forbes sparkled over 60 metres. The SprinTec lady opened her season in an eye-catching time of 7.14 seconds. “It felt really great. This is my first run, and to come out here and execute perfectly, it’s a good start,” Forbes said.

In the high school category, Excelsior High and St Jago High emerged with three wins apiece. The St Jago girls won carbon copy 4x100m wins over Edwin Allen High in Classes One, Two, and Three, creating big leads and fighting off big finishes in 46.10, 46.35 and 46.72 seconds, respectively. Edwin Allen reversed the trend in Class Four with 48.95 to 49.26 over St Jago.

Notably, the outstanding Class Two sprinter of the season, Edwin Allen’s Thieanna-Lee Terrelonge, didn’t compete.

Excelsior scooped up the Class One and Class Two 4x100m for boys with times of 40.92 and 41.69, respectively.

The third Excelsior win came in the 4x400m. The girls’ 4x400m went to St Catherine High.

The meet delivered notable field-event action as well. JC’s defending Class Two long jump champion Michael Edwards bounded to an impressive 6.85m. In the Class One discus, Joseph Salmon of Clarendon had a best of 50.19m, and Pan-Am Games discus bronze medallist Samantha Hall did 14.50m in the shot.

Early in the meet, the 4x800m relays were vastly different. Without Holmwood Technical in the race, the big Edwin Allen girls team strolled to a winning time of nine minutes 31.36 seconds.

On the other hand, Jamaica College split their 800m group into three teams. The outcome was a wild and wacky anchor. Rashid Pryce summoned a 1.56.6 seconds anchor to put JC ‘B’ on top – 7.57.75 – with top man Kemarrio Bygrave carrying JC ‘A’ from far back into the runner-up spot.

Bygrave later set a personal best of 47.54 seconds in the 400m.
