Five-star performance

Waterhouse Football Club signalled that they are one of the clubs to be reckoned with in this season’s Jamaica Premier League following an efficient 5-1 away win over Humble Lion at Effortville Community Centre yesterday.

A very pleased Damion Gordon, the assistant coach of Waterhouse, praised the players.

“We were very good offensively from the first half, and I knew that we would have had a good game. We managed the game well and took our chances in a very good team performance,” Gordon said after the game.

Losing coach Vassell Reynolds lamented his team’s slow start, which put them behind the eight ball.

“When you concede two early goals against a Waterhouse team, it’s going to be an uphill task,” Reynolds said.

From the opening whistle, the Marcel Gayle-coached Waterhouse demonstrated their high-pressing intentions, which caught the Humble Lion backline off guard from as early as the seventh minute.

Andre Fletcher benefited from a delightful chipped through pass from Revaldo Mitchell, and the forward made no mistake when he outsped Afiba Chambers and slotted low past Shamal Briscoe’s near post to give the visitors the lead.

Four minutes later, Waterhouse doubled their advantage as Fletcher again was on hand to finish off a swift counterattacking play, with the talisman firing low and hard past Briscoe, who, once again, was a spectator.

The two early goals enraged the ardent Humble Lion supporters, who called on their team to step up their game.

That seemed to work as they would pull a goal back when striker James Thomas pounced on a loose ball inside the Waterhouse area and fired past the diving Kemar Foster in goal in the 19th minute.

That goal seemed to have woken up the Waterhouse team once again as the pace of Denardo Thomas and the enterprise of Revaldo Mitchell would be too much for the hosts as Mitchell would restore their two-goal cushion with an emphatic finish off a counterattack in the 41st minute.

With rain now factoring in the second half, the slick-passing Waterhouse team used the conditions to their advantage as Javane Bryan notched his 12th goal of the season to put Waterhouse 4-1 in front in the 59th minute.

The winners then completed the scoring three minutes from full time with a goal from substitute Duvaughn Dunkley.

Waterhouse are sixth in the league with 30 points while Humble Lion are 11th with 18.

Cavalier who were not in action yesterday lead the league on goal difference ahead of Mount Pleasant. Both have 43 points but Cavalier have played 19 games and Mount Pleasant 20. Portmore are third with 40.
