AFTER A title-winning season in 2023 and two games deep into the 2024 Jamaica Women’s Premier League (JWPL) season, one of the country’s most sought-after coaches, Xavier Gilbert, has taken a back seat at Frazsiers Whip.

Gilbert guided the team to a league and knockout double in Frazsiers Whip’s first season but has since taken on the roles of coach of the Reggae Girlz and Arnett Gardens in the Jamaica Premier League. Those roles were added to his duties as head coach of Excelsior in the ISSA/Tip Friendly Schoolgirls’ Football Competition.

“The reality is that I still help out, but being the national senior team coach at this time, I’ve decided to pass on the reins. Arnett Gardens and Excelsior both train at different times and don’t have games at similar times. It’s about managing your time, and I have capable assistant coaches at both entities, so I made the best decision for the parties involved,” said Gilbert.

Though short, Gilbert says he has enjoyed his time coaching at the JWPL level.

“Last year was the first time at that level, and it was a successful one where we won all available titles. I enjoyed what I did, and that’s pretty much it.”

The defending champions will now be under the instruction of Everald Campbell, who Gilbert believes is more than capable of helping the team repeat as champions in both the league and knockout.

“Everald Campbell was my assistant at school and club, and he knows the players and understands what is expected. I have no doubt that they will give a good account of themselves and perform well this season,” said Gilbert

Despite enjoying his first season and having a team fully invested in defending its titles, Gilbert isn’t completely happy with the state of affairs in the JWPL.

“There are some areas that need improvement, and with it running concurrent with the school league, might have played a factor. So that’s something they can look at to ensure that the players aren’t overworked and that we receive quality at both the high school and club level,” Gilbert suggested.
