Waterhouse in pole position for final playoff spot

Waterhouse took a major step towards securing the sixth and final Jamaica Premier League (JPL) playoff spot with a 3-0 win over Molynes United at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex yesterday.

Goals from Jaheim Brown, Revaldo Mitchell, and Javane Bryan sealed the three points they needed to stay three clear of Montego Bay United, who play today, and six ahead of Dunbeholden, who fell to Cavalier and dropped out of the race for sixth going into next weekend’s final round of matches.

Waterhouse assistant coach Damion Gordon said the players knew what was required and performed professionally to get the win.

“It was a good, solid team performance. We kept a clean sheet and scored three. We just have to move forward,” he said. “We have one game to go. We have to continue irrespective of the opposition and what they are doing and win our games.

“In the last few games, this team has been really confident. We are scoring, and we haven’t conceded a lot of goals, which is a plus going forward,” Gordon said.

Waterhouse were out of the blocks early and Brown headed them in front after three minutes.

The Drewsland-based team controlled the next 25 minutes of the contest and created a number of good openings, and Leonardo Jibbison should have scored after making space in the area.

However, the half ended with Molynes having the upper hand and some threatening moments, which kept the Waterhouse defence busy.

Shamaro Dennis came the closest to an equaliser, but his well-taken freekick was parried for a corner by goalkeeper Kemar Foster.

Early in the second half, Bryan and Denardo Thomas missed two glorious chances, but Waterhouse eventually extended their lead when Mitchell intercepted a casual back pass from Sergeni Frankson and rounded Peter Harrison to score Waterhouse’s second.

Minutes later, they grabbed a third when Mitchell was fouled in the box and Bryan slotted home the penalty to make it 3-0.

“It was a difficult game for us. We always knew Waterhouse were going to be more motivated than we were. And once they scored, we knew it was going to be difficult to come back,” said Molynes assistant coach Jermaine Miller.

Molynes are 11th in the standings on 23 points.

Meanwhile, the top three - Mount Pleasant (56), Tivoli (51), and Cavalier (51) - had wins over Humble Lion, Lime Hall, and Dunbeholden, respectively.
