NEVER BEFORE has the phrase ‘the blind leading the blind’ elicited flutters of the heart.

That was until Senator, Professor Floyd Morris led a contingent of blind walkers in the 5K Walk at the recent The Best Dressed Chicken/Everyone’s A Winner Run/Walk at Hope Gardens, much to the admiration of hundreds.

Proceeds of this year’s event, held on Father’s Day, are earmarked to benefit the scholarship fund of the Jamaica Society for the Blind’s vision centre and Latoya Butler, 21 year-old daughter of a long-serving employee of The Best Dressed Chicken, battling leukaemia.

It was a day full of fun, food and games, with individuals, corporate teams and father-and-child duos participating in the 11th staging of the event.

Overall winners in the 5K Run female category were: Michka-Mae Hyde, first, with a time of 18 minutes, 17 seconds; in second place was Sabrina McDonald, Papine High School, at 21:59; and Tonya Busse, Pacers Running Club, third in 22:24.

In the 5K Run male category, the winners were: Noel Jonathan Ellis, Team Link Up (6:32), Kemar Leslie, Rainforest Caribbean, was second in 16:34, while third place went to Jomo-Rhys Gilman, also of Rainforest Caribbean, in 17:19.

Overall first place in the 3K Run female category went to Ariel Dyche (14:30), while second went to Kaelyn Lawes, JN Group (17:11), and third to Shadae Green, JN Group (18:23).

In the 3K Run male section, the overall winner was Royale Gordon of UCT Steppas, who clocked 11:47. Second place went to Royon Davis (12:51), with Oral Anderson of the Gleaner Company (Media) Ltd, third in 13:19.

The first-place winners in the 5K Run Top Father and Child category were: Eugent Dawes and Kendal Dawes of Legends Running Club, while Dominic Mullings and David Mullings of Mullo Running Club were second. Third place went to Stephen Royes and Abigail Royes of Pacers Running Club.

The Roy Thomas Award for the Top Champion Team went to Rainforest Caribbean, while the largest participating team was Restaurants of Jamaica, with 135 finishers.
