Former Reggae Boyz head coach, Heimir Hallgrimsson, has landed on his feet quickly, the Icelander landing a job with the Republic of Ireland.

Media reports out of Ireland suggest the coach was appointed after an eight-month-long recruitment process.

The coach had resigned from the Reggae Boyz post after a disastrous Copa America outing, highlighted by three successive defeats to Mexico, Ecuador, and Venezuela.

Hallgrimsson will get to work immediately, with his first assignment being a September meeting with England.

It is an honour to be appointed today. Ireland is rightly a proud footballing nation which has consistently produced talented players and enjoyed many memorable moments at major international tournaments,” Hallgrimsson told RTE News.

“We have a young and exciting team that has genuine potential. I am looking forward to working closely with the players to help coach and guide them towards improved performances and results, ensuring we qualify and compete at major tournaments on a regular basis,” he continued.

“We have important and exciting games coming up in the UEFA Nations League later this year and a massive FIFA World Cup qualification campaign coming up next year.”
