Arnett clip Racing 2-1, advance to Club Shield quarterfinals
Jamaica’s Arnett Gardens secured a 2-1 victory against Racing Club Aruba as action continued in the 2024 Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Shield at the Rignaal Jean Francisca Stadium on Saturday night in Curacao.
Arnett Gardens advanced to the quarterfinals of the Shield while Racing Club Aruba’s journey in the tournament ended with the defeat.
Racing Club Aruba, boasting 16 domestic titles, seized an early lead in the second minute due to a defensive mishap as Arnett Gardens defender Richardo White misjudged a back pass, which allowed Jhon Silva to intercept and fire home.
The five-time Jamaican champions went close to getting an equaliser shortly after, but Kimani Arbouine’s attempt went wide.
Despite numerous promising opportunities, Arnett Gardens struggled to score. A free-kick from Chavany Willis narrowly missed the target, hitting just above the crossbar. However, in added time of the first half Keneldo Brown was left unmarked and tapped in a cross to level the score at 1-1.
The second half was marked by intense end-to-end action, with both teams pressing. Arnett Gardens secured their victory in the 90th minute when substitute Rushane Thompson scored from close range.
Arnett Gardens will face home team CRKSV Jong Holland in the quarterfinals.
