A WORKMANLIKE performance by St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS) saw them registering a 2-0 victory over Zone D opponents Camperdown at the Boys’ Town field in the ISSA Manning Cup competition yesterday.

The Phillip Williams-coached STATHS started with their feet on the gas pedal, making their intentions known as early as the second minute, Howard Linton’s powerful right-footed shot slamming into the upright.

As they continued their press for an early goal, STATHS were rewarded in the 15th minute courtesy of a strike from Ajetai Marshall.

The goal proved a wake-up call for Camperdown, who became more spirited, slowly growing into the game.

Still, Camperdown’s good work was all defensive, while STATHS continued to launch attacks that were all neutered.

In the second half, chances were few and far in between with the teams seemingly cancelling each other out.

However, in the final five minutes, STATHS went in search of an insurance goal, coming close in the 84th minute with Zaheim Clarke’s close-range effort cleared off the line.

In the dying embers of the game, STATHS’ positive intent again paid dividends through Christiano Brown’s goal.

Speaking after the match, Williams said he was aware that Zone D will be a tightly contested one, therefore, he is thankful to have walked away with all three points.

“We got the three points, however, we know it’s going to be a tight zone. It was a tough game as we played without three of our regular players. It’s a very tough zone, and we have to gather the points, so we’re thankful for that,” he stated.

Leebert Halliman, head coach of Camperdown, said he envisioned a tough season because he is short on resources.

“If you noticed, we only had two changes on the bench as we don’t have enough resources. We’re not getting that support, and it’s like getting basket to carry water. I think the boys tried, but we don’t have a football culture at the moment,” the veteran coach explained.
