Sweet revenge for Tivoli High
In an act of revenge for their loss earlier in the season, Tivoli High defeated Wolmer’s Boys 4-2 in an exciting Zone E finale of the ISSA Manning Cup yesterday, to take the top honours after the first round.
Wolmer’s entered the fixture unbeaten this season but could not contain a surging Tivoli unit buoyed by their vocal home support and school band.
The result was seemingly an act of revenge for the west Kingston-based school who had been beaten 4-2 by the Wolmerians in the reverse fixture earlier in the round.
Tivoli opened the scoring early through Ryan-Oneil Francis in the 12th minute, before Kaqummarie McKoy doubled the advantage in the 23rd minute, heading home from a corner.
Wolmer’s would claw their way back into the contest when Bryce Fletcher pulled one back four minutes into the second half.
However, Tivoli sealed the win when Francis and McKoy added the third and fourth goals of the game in quick succession and completed their pair of braces in the contest.
Daniel Scarlett scored another consolation goal for the Wolmerians from the penalty spot in the 82nd minute.
Tivoli head coach Christopher Nicholas was grinning ear to ear after the game, having been proven a man of his word. He had promised that his team would get the win at home against the Wolmerians, following their away defeat.
“I’m feeling proud,” he said. “I’m feeling proud because these boys came out and gave their best effort and fought all the way to the end. We knew Wolmer’s were not going to be easy opponents, because we both wanted to finish on top.
“They hadn’t lost a game in the round and we have only lost one, so we knew it was going to be a tough game.”
The win sees Tivoli finishing atop Zone E with 27 points, ahead of Wolmer’s who fall to second place with 25.
Wolmer’s head coach Jerome Waite said he was impressed with his team’s performance despite the loss, as they were playing without five of their regular starters.
He said the objective now is to prepare for the second round and ensure his team is back to full fitness.
“We have to say congratulations to the Tivoli team. They have done well. Today, Wolmer’s had five absentees due to injuries but we still had to honour the fixture,” he explained.
“What was good about this game is that a lot of other players were given the opportunity to play. So we will definitely see what these youngsters can do when they come up against (stronger) teams in the second round,” Waite said.
