What group of death?
Tivoli not fazed by tough final eight teams
DRAWN IN Group 1 of the quarterfinal round of the ISSA Manning Cup against the likes of defending champions Mona, 31-time champions Jamaica College, and 16-time winners Kingston College, the Christopher Nicholas-coached Tivoli say they remain unfazed.
“As far as we’re concerned, we know what we can do and what we’re capable of. We’ll let the ball speak for itself because you’re seeing everything, but we truly believe in our talent and the youngsters,” said Nicholas.
Tivoli booked their spot in the final eight of the competition by finishing behind Excelsior in Zone 2 of the round of 16. Nicholas believes his team earned that spot and that there are no minnows at this stage of the competition.
“It must be something that we’re doing why we’re here. We’re not here because of luck, so we all know what time it is. We’re not scared of any team, so anybody that’s coming to beat Tivoli will have to come and play because we will be ready,” he added.
Finding form at the perfect time
Nicholas added that while the defensive line has been competent, his front line has impressed him. He added that as a coach, it was also a pleasing sight that the team was finding form at the perfect time.
“I’m mostly pleased with the strikers and the attacking force. It’s been a while since we’ve scored this number of goals, and every player is clicking. At times we’ll have a slight glitch in the defensive line, but the attacking force will even cover for the defence as that’s how we play,” he said.
Tivoli’s campaign in the final eight will kick off tomorrow against Kingston College. The game should have been played on Tuesday but was postponed on account of the passage of Topical Storm Rafael.
According to Nicholas, his charges have been eager to continue their preparation even during the heavy rains as they’re locked in for their opener against the famed ‘Purples’.
“The guys were calling out to train because of the mindset they’re in. They’re ready. It’s only because I was thinking they’re kids and was thinking of their safety, so that’s why I told them to stay home.”
