Hydel’s girls shine at Purewater Throws Fest
Hydel High’s girls produced two days of outstanding performances in field events at the Purewater/R. Danny Williams/JC Throws Fest at the Ashenheim Stadium at the weekend.
The meet, which started on Friday, saw Natassia Burrell picking up a double. She secured her first win on Friday with a personal best of 45.93 metres to capture the Class One discus. Hydel finished one-two in the event as Shanangelo Zandria Williams, formerly of Denbigh High, was second with a personal best of 42.10m. Sage Cruickshank of Convent of Mercy (Alpha) placed third with a mark of 38.35m.
Burrell returned on Saturday to complete her double. She won the javelin open with 39.70m. Rihanna Lewis of Camperdown was second with 27.63m, and Hydel’s Williams claimed her second top-three finish of the meet with a mark of 21.60m.
Hydel also triumphed in the Class Three discus where Shantal Ferguson was first with a throw of 27.50m. Tashanti Fearon of Alpha placed second with 26.40m and Tashney Golding of Merl Grove High third, with 25.84m.
Hydel had two more wins in the Class Two high jump and the triple jump open. In the high jump, they had another one-two finish. Zavian Bernard cleared 1.65m for first, and her teammate, Jada Jones, was second with 1.55m, the same height as third-place Mikayala Lagner of Holmwood Technical.
Atkinson delivered Hydel’s second win in the pit, capturing the triple jump with a personal best and meet record 12.20m. Teammate Bernard was second with 11.81m, and Cheyenne Cooper of William Knibb secured third with 10.86m.
Other notable winners in the girls’ field events were Merl Grove’s Abigail Bennett, Wolmer’s Danielle Noble, and St Catherine High’s Able Mills.
Bennett won the Class Two discus with a personal best 43.69m. Hydel’s Brandana Malcolm (38.33m) and Aisha Marie Williams (32.40m) were second and third, respectively.
Noble claimed the Class One high jump with a best of 1.75m to equal her personal best. Shanniqua Williams of St Andrew High was second with the same height, and Deijanae Bruce of Edwin Allen took third with 1.65m.
Mills delivered a strong performance in the Class One shot put. She won with a personal best of 14.62m. Clarendon College’s Maria Kay Lampart was second with 14.23m, while Hydel’s Burrell was third with 12.68m.
Host team Jamaica College (JC) made their mark among the boys with victories in the Class One discus and triple jump, scoring one-two finishes in both events.
Joseph Solomon dominated the Class One discus, achieving a personal best of 58.56m for the win. Teammate Matthew Blake was second with 51.58m and Delano Smith of Calabar High placed third with a personal best 48.90m.
Chavez Penn established himself as a favourite for Boys’ Championships in the Class One triple jump. He won with a meet record and personal best 15.56m. JC’s J’Aier Edahj Sean Cato, a St Vincentian, took second with 14.83m, and David Douglas of Wolmer’s Boys was third with 13.68m.
Kingston College’s Alexander Betancourt, originally from Cuba, captured the javelin throw with a best of 57.38m. JC’s Jayvoni Neckles was second with 56.93m, and Tarique Daley of Calabar claimed third with 53.96m.
Edward Sterling of Wolmer’s won the Class One long jump with a leap of 7.12m ahead of teammate Nicho Gray Clarke (7.06m).
