St Jago High’s Jevaney Findlay sprints away from the field to win the Class Three boys’ 200 metres in 22.55 seconds at the Purewater Sprint Fest held at Ashenheim Stadium, Jamaica College, last Friday.

THERE WERE several outstanding performances on the track over the past weekend as high school teams began their journey to the ISSA Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships, set to take place in two months.

Undoubtedly, the performances that caught the eyes of fans at both the Sprint Fest 200m and the Purewater R Danny Williams meets came from Class III athletes of St Jago High School, whose exceptional displays had spectators talking throughout the events.

At the Sprint Fest on Friday, Jevaney Findlay and Rajaun Romelly exhibited imperious form in the 200 metres. Findlay clocked 22.55 seconds, the fastest time among his peers, while his teammate Romelly was not far behind, winning his heat in 22.56.

If that wasn’t enough, the Monk Street-based school continued to dominate the following day at the Purewater R Danny Williams meet. In a jaw-dropping performance, young Khieme Campbell excelled in the Class III 800m.

Known primarily for his prowess in the 400, Campbell, competing in his first-ever 800m, stopped the clock at an astounding 2 minutes, 02.59 seconds to top the field.

He edged out Kingston College’s Kenya-based athlete, Julius Itubo, the favourite for the Champs title, who finished second in 2:02.82.

Following the weekend’s impressive performances, Davon Spence, who oversees the Class III programme, expressed confidence that his athletes would dominate all events in the age group at Champs.

“I have a very disciplined group of Class III boys who are committed to making St Jago proud both on the track and in the classroom,” said Spence. “The boys have challenged me in how I’ve been preparing them. We plan to achieve excellent results in the 100, 200, 400, 800, 1500, 4x100m relays, and field events at Champs this year, and I am very excited,” added Spence, a former St Jago sprinter.
