Green Island High alumni to raise funds for sixth-form block

The Steering committee of the Jamaica chapter of the Green Island High School Alumni Association has plans under way to construct a sixth-form block with funds from a series of fundraising efforts.
The group will be staging its first fundraiser in the form of a dinner at the school on Saturday, January 28.
"The objective of this project is to engage in the construction of two classrooms to facilitate the sixth-form programme of the institution. Currently, the students are nomadic or itinerant, as the library and makeshift spaces are utilised to undertake the daily teaching/learning exercises," alumni spokesman Leroy Dawes said.
He said the sixth-form programme at the institution is in its third year, having started with 30 students. It has now increased to 78, spanning lower and upper cohorts.
"The success of the school's endeavour is reflected in its top-10 position at CXC theatre arts (drama) in the island," Dawes said.
FAMILY FUN DAY
He said the the steering committee of the alumni plans to host a unique reunion family fun day this summer, to bring together and cater to alumni residing overseas and outside western Jamaica.
Dawes said the dinner being planned for January 28 will be a semi-formal affair under candlelight, featuring a rich variety of cultural presentations, fine music, giveaways, a raffle, a special appearance by recording artiste Marisko and a keynote speaker.
The steering committee of the alumni is co-chaired by Pauline Henry, who represents the board of governors, and Collette Myers from the academic staff. Other members of the team include former teacher and principal Ansel Brown, current teachers Judith Scarlette, Patrecia Morgan-Symister, Aria Blair-Hamilton, Elaine Dixon-Crooks and past student Jack Cole.
