Bisexual Jamaican wins asylum case in UK

A 33-year-old Jamaican bisexual man who told a British court he could be killed if deported to Jamaica, has won his case to remain in the United Kingdom. 

The UK Guardian newspaper reports that Orashia Edwards, was granted asylum and therefore the right to remain in the UK following a legal battle with the British government for almost four years. 

The report said Edwards was excited about the developments and pointed to now being able to open a bank account, apply for jobs and pursue an electrical engineering course. 

A judge had ruled that Edwards was dishonest about his sexuality. 

But Edwards, who was in a relationship with a man through most of his appeal of the decision, argued that he was treated unfairly because of misconceptions about bisexuality.

He also appealed on grounds about the safety of his life as a result of the widespread media coverage.  

Edwards, who was repeatedly detained during the resolution of his asylum claim, said he had provided intimate pictures of himself with another man to support his claim, but that officials had refused to acknowledge them as evidence of his sexuality.

Under Jamaican law, people found guilty engaging in anal sex, can be jailed for up to 10 years. 

Last week, a new study released by local gay lobby JFLAG showed that most gay Jamaicans have considered migrating.
