Tackle the non-compliant

Published:Tuesday | January 5, 2010 | 12:00 AM

The Editor, Sir:

Jamaica's tax system needs to be reformed and one way I think it needs to be addressed is in the area of enforcement of the collection process.

There seems to be a serious level of non-compliance among the persons who are not PAYE contributors, and among the persons collecting GCT from consumers to be handed over to the Government.

Tax officers

Some persons crying out the loudest are not paying the taxes they should be paying. I would suggest that the Government needs to train at least 500 tax-compliance officers and send them out to bring in those persons who are self-employed and those persons who are withholding taxes collected on behalf of the Government.

I am, etc.,
