School teacher held in fraud scheme

A CLARENDON-based teacher, who allegedly defrauded three persons after they responded to newspaper advertisements regarding motor cars for sale, has been charged by the police.

Keisha Anderson, who teaches at the Freetown Primary School in the parish, was taken into custody on Thursday by Fraud Squad Detectives following months of investigations.

Anderson has been charged with three counts of obtaining money by false pretense.

It is alleged that Anderson collected more than $200,000 after advertising motor vehicles for sale on a number of occasions.

According to the police, Anderson told the would-be purchasers to make a deposit into accounts held at two established financial institutions.

After several attempts to get the vehicles and failed efforts to contact Anderson, the would-be purchasers reported the matter to the police.

Following investigations, Anderson was arrested while at school and taken to the Fraud Squad offices in Kingston where she was interviewed.

Yesterday, several persons told The Gleaner that they had almost fallen victim to the scam but managed to avoid it because they were not comfortable with the request that a deposit be placed in an account.
