Of what use are prayers?
The Editor, Sir:
I am tempted to ask my prayerful friend Earlmont Williams how much prayers, and for how long must we offer them up before God hears us?
His letter "Prayer and national challenges" (Saturday, January 23) suggests that if a nation prays long and hard enough, the God of Moses will answer. Well, China is not a Christian nation, yet it is a prosperous one. Is God more favourable to China than Jamaica, or is it that their 'God' answers prayers more reliably than ours? Jamaica is a Christian nation with more churches per square mile than most others. We have some of the most devout Christians in the world, yet we have more murders and mayhem than China and even Iraq. The Devil himself must be getting exhausted.
How much more prayer and tears does God need before he shows us some mercy?
I am, etc.,
