Elletson Rd armoury getting CCTV

Weeks after a rank-and-file policeman made a public appeal for a closed-circuit television (CCTV) to be installed in the armoury at the Elletson Road Police Station, the national security ministry says work was well under way to put in place such a system.

National Security Minister Dwight Nelson promised yesterday that CCTV cameras would be placed inside and outside the premises.

Nelson yesterday visited the armoury to get a first-hand view of the progress being made by the Internal Audit Unit of the Ministry of National Security on the work being done.

His ministry said in a release yesterday that this formed part of extensive work being done to the armoury to bolster the security mechanism.

The minister had ordered an audit in the aftermath of an incident last month, when 19 guns and approximately 11,000 rounds of ammunition from the armoury were seized at premises on Munster Road in eastern St Andrew.

Pleased with work

A release from the ministry said Nelson was accompanied by acting Police Commissioner Owen Ellington, Deputy Commissioner Charles Scarlett, the chief internal auditor, other personnel from the JCF and the Internal Audit team.

The minister said he was pleased with the reconstruction work being done on the storage area.

The ministry said Nelson was assured by the Internal Audit team that the armoury and the attendant processes would serve as a template for other storage facilities islandwide.
