Can't wait on MPs

THE EDITOR, Sir:
A recent news report about the unfairness in the allocation of funds for road repair and maintenance in some areas of St Elizabeth should not cause the mayor of Black River to invoke his Christian beliefs in affirming his commitment to equity in the distribution of money.
I would like to inform the councillor from the Myersville division that the citizens in North West St Elizabeth have always taken the initiative to keep the secondary roads open without relying on or waiting for the Government.
We recognise that our economic and social survival depends on good communication. Our children must be in school, farm products must get to the market, and we have no time to wait on Mr J.C. Hutchinson to make representation on our behalf.
It is time for our political leaders to get up, reach out and mobilise their communities to take some responsibility in keeping the roads open. It is time that people rely less on the Government to do for them what they can do for themselves. Council members need to assert themselves, and take leadership roles that will get their hands dirty.
This is an example of what is wrong with the leadership in the public sector. Some of our political leaders are too laid-back, lackadaisical and dependent. It is time to get up, reach out and stop the crying, pleading and begging for help.
We need leaders who are innovative, hard-working and are willing to make sacrifices for the common good of all the people.
