Burning anger

Published:Friday | January 21, 2011 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I write in response to the letter to the editor, published in The Gleaner on January 20, about burning being a nuisance to the environment. I totally concur, but go a bit further.

I dare say that unless something is done about it, Jamaicans will be the worse off in a couple of years. Those with asthma, like myself, will surely die faster or get worse, and we'll be having others in our company. This will become more burdensome on the health sector, among other problems.

The burning of paper products is not so bad, but it's the constant burning of wood, Styrofoam and plastic that has almost rendered me a prisoner in my house. As the writer of that article stated, the odour emanating from the burning of those products is unbearable.

I need the authorities to do something about it. It's terrible! Where I reside in the inner city, it's awful. I cringe when I see garbage, especially on the roadside and in woodwork shops.

I am, etc.,

SICK AND

FRUSTRATED CITIZEN
