Court awards much too high

Published:Saturday | January 22, 2011 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

This letter is in response to the letter by Mr Bert Samuels, attorney-at-law, and addressed to Mr Bruce Golding, prime minister.

When I was a young boy, my grandmother told me, "Speak the truth and speak it ever, cost it what it may." Another thing she taught me was, "Two wrongs don't make a right."

Bruce Golding is wrong in putting up Shahine Robinson as a candidate, but he is correct about judges awarding such ridiculously high awards for legal costs.

I fully agree with the reasons Mr Bert Samuels gave that Shahine Robinson should not be an MP. I would also like Shahine Robinson to reimburse Jamaica all the money and benefits she earned as MP.

Parliament must put regulations in place to make judges not lose sight of reality. The mere fact that judges award these ridiculously high legal-cost awards is a reflection of a poor standard of government.

Naturally, attorneys will not object to the high fees and will do everything possible to keep them high.

Sorry, Mr Samuels, I am one of your biggest fans, but I disagree with your stance on the matter of high legal fees. I have to side with Mr Golding on that one.

I am, etc.,

DANNY G. PERSAUD
