Crafts people directory needed

Published:Tuesday | February 8, 2011 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I am writing to make a suggestion to the newspaper.

Often, you feature stories of crafts people and their small businesses, such as the father-and-son clay pottery business in the February 6, 2011 Sunday edition.

The newspaper has featured many others: the woodcarver who was experiencing difficulty getting customers to purchase his wares because of the airline luggage restrictions, the group of woodcarvers preserving their mentor's legacy and their need for assistance with tools, among others.

Mr Editor, my suggestion is for The Gleaner to establish a directory with information regarding these small businesses.

The Gleaner's online portal is global, and, if information about these small business operators was made available, it would be a tremendous service to these crafts people.

I appreciate the effort of The Gleaner to feature these crafts people. Despite the challenges, their diligence and commitment to the preservation of a small part of our culture is worthy of the attention the newspaper has provided.

Keep up the good work.

I am, etc,

B. JOHNSON
