THE EDITOR, Sir:

I extend gratitude to The Gleaner Company for sponsoring the Children's Own Spelling Bee competition for 52 years.

Thanks also to the associate sponsors and contributors. My son was beaming with delight from all the goodies he got at the nationals.

Having a passion for spelling, I always cherished the thought of having my children becoming Spelling Bee champions.

In 2008, my son, Sajaey Harrison, was St Ann's champion boy and second-place winner.

Sajaey was again Champion Boy and third-place winner in 2009. However, in 2010, Sajaey finally emerged overall champion, as his younger brother, Daniel Harrison, held second place. Thank you, The Gleaner Company. You have brought out the spelling potentiality in our Jamaican children and have made many parents and families very proud.

The spelling bee competition has helped to build children's confidence and self-esteem, which will create very intelligent and disciplined boys and girls in the future.

Could other companies join with The Gleaner Company in empo-wering our Jamaican children?

Thanks also to Valerie Bailey- Wishart, a coach who is very enthused with the spelling bee competition.

I am, etc.,

SANDRA HARRISON
