Staggering fuel prices at pumps

Published:Friday | February 18, 2011 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I believe someone needs to do a thorough investigation into the prices gas stations are charging motorists for fuel.

Based on the US$ equivalent for a barrel of oil, I am failing to see how the figures for pricing gas in Jamaica are honestly arrived at, or should one assume that the bulk of what is charged is purely profit?

What role does the Jamaica Gasolene Retailers' Association or even the Consumer Affairs Commission play in protecting the market and those who exist therein? Don't tell me that owners are free to do just about anything they want seeing that gas has now become a necessity.

Therefore, if anyone out there has insight into all of this, please share with the public the reasoning behind the questionable state of affairs in the gasolene market.

I am, etc.,

D. HARRIS
