For the past 13 years, the sleepy fishing village of Alligator Pond has come alive on the second Sunday every July for the Bigga Little Ochie Seafood Carnival. This year will be no different! Thousands of seafood lovers will get to eat their favourites in every conceivable style at Little Ochie against the backdrop of the beach, great music and in a real family setting.

The Bigga Little Ochie Seafood Carnival will take place over three days from Friday, July 8 to Sunday, July 10. Friday will be dubbed Seafood After Dark, encouraging individuals to come out and enjoy the variety of seafood, music and bonfire on the beach. The atmosphere will be similar to the big day minus the sun and the crowd, an excellent way to jam with friends after work.

Lionfish tournament

On Saturday, July 9, the final catch and weighing of the lionfish tournament will culminate in Alligator Pond. The tournament officially begins on Sunday, June 26 and will involve fishermen from three fishing villages: Rocky Point in Clarendon, Alligator Pond in Manchester and Whitehouse in Westmoreland. Over the two-week period, the catch will be weighed and recorded under the supervision of representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture. The final catch will be added to the total to determine the winning fishing team on Saturday.

Sunday's activities will surround the usual wide assortment of seafood dishes, lots of music headed by Byron Lee's Dragonaires, a range of exhibits and a play area for children. The highlight of the day will be the Lionfish and Celebrity Cook-off. The Lionfish Cook-Off is a test of the individual, student or chef having the best or most interesting lionfish recipe coming out of the competition which will begin on Monday, June 13.

Individuals, tertiary institutions or catering schools and chefs in hotels across Jamaica are all eligible to enter this competition. The best three entries from each category will be selected and invited to participate in the cook-off on Sunday, July 10. The objective is to encourage the cooking and eating of lionfish in order to deplete the population and save the fishing environment.

Other sponsors of the Bigga Little Ochie Seafood Carnival are The Gleaner Power 106, Digicel, Supreme Ventures and Rainforest Seafoods, IRIE FM and CVM TV.

This year's event was launched at a lavish seafood night out at Jencare Skin Farm, 82 Hope Road, on Friday, June 8.
