The policeman who is the alleged mastermind behind the theft of guns and thousands of rounds of ammunition from the police armoury will know today if he has a case to answer.

Dirk Harrison, deputy director of public prosecutions, argued yesterday that the Crown had presented sufficient evidence to establish its case against police Sergeant Russell Robinson.

Defence lawyer Valerie Neita-Robertson, in making a no-case submission at the end of the Crown's case, had argued that Robinson should be freed because of numerous discrepancies in the prosecution's arguments.

In custody since last year

Supreme Court judge Horace Marsh, after hearing the submissions, reserved his decision for today. Robinson has been in custody since he was arrested and charged last year February.

The Crown is alleging at the trial, which began last year in the Gun Court, that Robinson was held in February 2010 on Munster Road in Kingston 2 with 18 firearms and ammunition belonging to the police armoury.

He is facing charges of illegal possession of firearm and ammunition. He was assigned to the armoury at the time of the alleged offence.

Three other men arrested with Robinson in relation to the incident pleaded guilty to several charges and were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 10 to 13 years.
