More stories of outstanding academic performances in this year's Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations are emerging.

Up to yesterday, four other students have come forward with grade-one passes in at least nine subjects, including Manning's student Miltonia Thompson, who had 11 grade-one passes.

The others are Stefan Richards, of Campion College, who had 10 grade-one passes; Danielle Ewart, also of Manning's, who had nine grade ones; and David Barnes, an Ardenne High student, who was successful with 10 distinctions.

This follows the story of 17-year-old St Andrew High School student Narique McIntosh, who scored perfect grades in nine subjects in this year's CSEC exams.

Thompson, who wants to pursue a career in medicine, was delighted that her hard work has paid off.

"It was a lot of hard work because I had to spend very long hours studying and attending extra classes," she said, adding that discipline and her belief in God were also responsible for her success.

Support from parents

Richards, who wants to study international law and work with the United Nations, said hard work and encouragement from his mother were the main reasons for his success.

The 17-year-old also admitted that he was surprised at how well he did.

"I could not believe it! I had to look at it again," he told The Gleaner yesterday.

Barnes said his accomplishment was not an easy feat, but credits his teachers, parents and the "help of God" for his success.

"Doing 11 subjects (one CAPE) is a lot of work. Sometimes you get discouraged, but my teachers and parents were there to motivate me and you just have to remember that the Lord is there to help," he said.

Barnes, who will start sixth form in September, said he wants to pursue a career in actuarial science or engineering.
