Camille Buchanan has won the right to represent the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) as candidate in the newly formed St Catherine East Central.

The selection, which took place at the Gregory Park Basic School in Portmore, St Catherine, saw Buchanan defeating Robert Miller 49 to 24 votes.

Some 73 people voted in the election. There were 84 people on the voter's list.

JLP General Secretary Aundré Franklin, who supervised the election, said the party's standing committee would not be asked to ratify her candidacy.

He also said "the selection of Camile Buchanan means that the party would have completed the selection of candidates for the three new seats".

Buchanan is already promising to deliver the seat for the JLP in the upcoming general election which is due next year.

"The party will be taking the seat in the upcoming general election. I want to specially acknowledge Robert Miller. He is a very good member of the party and we will be working together," Buchanan said.

Miller was gracious in defeat.

"I want to thank the delegates. I am a person who believes in faith and God sees that it is not my time," he said.

Arnaldo Brown is slated to represent the PNP in the seat which, based on the results of the 2007 general election, the JLP has the advantage.

The seat includes polling divisions taken from Gregory Park in South Central St Catherine, as well as parts of the old South East and South St Catherine seats.

An analysis of the 2007 general election results suggests that the JLP has a majority of 530 voters in the constituency.
