Justice Minister Delroy Chuck yesterday advanced strong arguments in favour of the use of video and still cameras in courtrooms.

Chuck, during the formal opening of the Lucea Family Courthouse in Hanover, invited stakeholders to begin the debate on cameras in courtrooms.

The justice minister came down on the side of allowing the media to record court proceedings with notable exceptions such as children-related offences and sensitive legal matters.

Chuck stressed that Jamaica needed to follow global trends where the televising of court proceedings has become commonplace in other countries around the world.

He also strenuously opposed the decision by the authorities in some courts to turn away members of the public simply because they have no direct relationship to the case, again with notable exceptions.
