SOFIA, Bulgaria (AP):

Bulgaria's military says one of its fighter jets has crashed during a training mission but its crew of two have ejected safely.

The Defence Ministry said a MiG-29 fighter jet went down yesterday near the village of Golyam Chardak about 160 kilometres (100 miles) east of Sofia without causing any damage on the ground.

The ministry said the plane had caught fire after take-off, but the two pilots ejected safely before the jet hit the ground.

The Russian-made twin-engined MiG-29 entered service with Bulgaria's air force in 1989.

The ministry said it has cancelled a joint Bulgarian-US flight training with the participation of the 31st Fighter Wing of the US Air Force based in Aviano, Italy, which was scheduled for today.
