Davian Grant: Self-motivated go-getter

WESTERN BUREAU:As a student at the Montego Bay Community College, Davian Grant understands the importance of a college education as he strives to become the first in his family to obtain a degree.

"My struggles were so many, but I realised that money is not all in this race for success. The degree is for my family, and I can really make a difference," Grant said.

Hailing from the community of Hopewell in Hanover, the 25-year-old describes himself as an independent young man who is hard-working and passionate about education.

But for someone who failed most of his Caribbean Examination Council subjects (a requirement to be accepted into college); the reality of tertiary education seemed very distant.

"I did not have anyone to motivate me and help me realise my true potential. I had to find it from within," revealed the aspiring entrepreneur and banker.

"After high school, I got a job with National Youth Service and successfully resat the exams. I was accepted at the community college where I have completed an Associate Degree in Accounting."

He is now in his final year for the Bachelor's Degree in Finance and Management at the institution. Grant is also a part-time employee at the University of Technology Western Campus in Montego Bay. He is also a 2010-2011 National Commercial Bank scholarship awardee.

Grant is active in the Mount Ebenezer Church of The Nazarene, which has helped to develop certain key values that have kept him on track. He also assists students in his community with assignments in the evening.

His advice for youth who may face challenging circumstances in their educational pursuit: "Every individual has the capacity to learn. You should find out what your strengths are and try to find something that motivates you, and never make money be your downfall. Believe in God, position yourself, and He will work things out."
