Camp Renew: life-skills summer camp for kids

More families use the summer break to help their children achieve peak performance and improve interpersonal skills. Recognising this need, some local psychologists and other experts have designed an exciting two-week life skills-boosting summer camp for children and teens, nine to 15 years old.

The camp, known as 'Camp Renew' recognises that outstanding academic performance is important for success in children and teens but, just as crucial in healthy development and success, is an acquaintance with the life skills that build character. Here are some of the skills the children and teens will be exposed to:

1. Social and interpersonal skills (including communication, refusal skills, assertiveness, and empathy).

2. Cognitive skills (including decision making, critical thinking and self-evaluation).

3. Emotional coping skills (including stress management, feelings identification and increasing an internal locus of control).

These skills will be taught using drama, role playing, music, expressive art therapy and other performing arts. An important aspect of this summer camp is that each child will be exposed to psychological assessment and an individualised care plan. The camp will also work closely with teachers and parents.
