Catching the Christmas spirit!

As the recent outbreak of dengue fever subsides we have now got into the flu season. I know there are lots of suggestions out there on how to avoid the flu, and I am hoping that you are doing all you can to keep clear of it. There is, however, another condition which you might find yourself catching at this time of year.

It is not as easy to diagnose as dengue and flu, but each year we see an epidemic of it in Jamaica, and even persons who are 'immunised' can get a full dose. Most of my patients over 50 have had it repeatedly and, I dare say, have knowingly exposed me to it. Some people, I believe, even go looking for it without any protection and deliberately spread it to others. Personally, I was exposed to it long before I entered medical school. I am talking about the Christmas spirit!

Catching the spirit

The season of Christmas, which is practically the month of December, brings with it a lot of environmental changes. The sunlight looks different, evenings get darker much earlier and temperatures drop, particularly at nights. In the market we see an abundance of sorrel and the emergence of green gungo peas.

The radio stations start playing Christmas songs and the shops get decorated and promote the purchase of gifts. You may find yourself singing some of the songs and having a feeling of optimism, caring, and giving. You may smile more and take on your work with a renewed energy or, in some cases, as the day goes by just look at your work and smile! Before you know it, it has dawned on you! "Gee whiz, it's Christmas!"

Complex condition

All in all, the Christmas spirit is a complex condition with varying quality and intensity of expression. It's also complex because on the surface, the expressions are one of celebration and festivity. When you catch the flu and get all of those horrible achy feelings, you know it's a virus. When you get so happy and excited or feel that change in mood at Christmas, do you stop to think what has really bitten you? The true spirit of Christmas lies in a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. So when you do catch the spirit, it is worth reflecting on the real cause of this condition.

Spread the signs

Sometimes it's hard to catch it and things get in the way. Whether it's the economy, work stress, family problems or just general burnout, you might be having a difficult reflection at this time. Note that being 50 and over should not be a barrier! Try renewing a friendship, making a visit to family or the hospital, or home for seniors or just sending out some greetings. Try it and see what happens! If you catch the Christmas spirit, do accept it, enjoy it, don't lose it, and spread the joy and its meaning to others.

Have a Merry Christmas!
