Which rock?

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Dear Dr Rattray,

In your article that appeared in The Gleaner on April 1, 2013, you wrote that Peter is the 'rock' on which Yeshua said His Church would be built. The Catholic Church claims that Peter was the first Pope, but this is doubtful as there is no record of Peter having gone to Rome. However, the records clearly indicate that Paul went there.

Yeshua said in John 2:19: "Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up." He did not mean the literal temple that was standing. He meant His body. In the same way when he said to Peter "on this rock I will build my church", I believe that he was speaking of Himself. He was the rock in the wilderness when the children of Israel came out of Egypt. He is the solid rock on which we stand.

A church built on Peter (a mere human being with frailties and shortcomings who didn't die for our sins) doesn't seem right - a lie which has been fed to people down through the ages and swallowed hook, line, and sinker.

My rock is Yeshua and the gates of hell will not prevail against Him and those who obey and follow His instructions and not the traditions of men.
