JLP must say sorry to J'cans

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I am very concerned about the fact that the Opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) is upset that Minister Peter Bunting appeared on the Dudus documentary on 'America's Most Evil'. I am even more appalled at the threat of lawsuit for comments Minister Bunting made.

I am very much aware that the JLP would love Jamaicans to forget about the event and any attempt to resurrect the ghost that is attached to the Dudus saga and the JLP's involvement would be deemed as libellous. This is to muzzle the country and the international community.

This threat of lawsuit is undemocratic and seeks to prevent the country from truly discussing the issues surrounding the Dudus affair and ensuring that never again does something of that nature happen in Jamaica.

There was nothing Mr Bunting said that could have further damaged the country's reputation, because the JLP's nine-month refusal to extradite Coke actually led to a near genocide of the good name of Jamaica.

During the Dudus affair, my friend from St Vincent said to me, "If Jamaica voted back in the JLP, this would say a lot about the Jamaican people." For those of us Jamaicans who live and study abroad, the Dudus affair brought tears to our eyes and cemented many negative stereotypes.

Not one member of the JLP has apologised to Jamaicans at home and abroad for the bloody crackdown that caused us international disgrace. The JLP must come to the country and say sorry for destroying Brand Jamaica.

I suggest that the JLP rid itself of arrogance and pride and do the best thing by apologising to us. This will be a start to redeem your image and the image of Jamaica at large.
