Fed up with windscreen washer abuse

Published:Saturday | July 13, 2013 | 12:00 AM

I have returned to the country of my birth after spending years overseas. Patriotism has pulled me into enjoying the fruits of my labour.

But why on God's earth am I being subjected to so much abuse every time I drive on the streets of the Corporate Area by ill-mannered youths who claim to be windscreen washers?

I have been threatened on numerous occasions, and I think I have reached my limit now. I called the police station at Hunts Bay once about it, and was told by the policeman who answered the phone that she would encourage me to wind up my window and ignore them. Thanks for your help, officer, my problem has not been solved!

Two weeks ago, I had washed my car and was driving through Portia Simpson Miller Square at Three Miles. On approaching the stop light, which was on green, my progress was impeded, so I had to stop. The youths then proceeded to spray dirty water on my car, despite my telling them not to clean the windscreen. I was told a barrage of expletives and told various things about my sexuality. My wife, who was beside me, intervened and she was told various uncomplimentary descriptions of her anatomy.

My wife is not Jamaican, and I encouraged her to come here with me after retirement, despite the negative press about our country overseas. I am quite embarrassed about the situation. My wife is now considering going back to England.

I am begging the relevant authorities, please, on behalf of the hard-working people who traverse these streets every day, to do something about this.
