WESTERN BUREAU:

The fashion statements were scribbled on the red carpet as patrons competed offstage with the 25 beauties in the Miss Jamaica World (MJW) 2013 pageant at the Montego Bay Convention Centre on Sunday.

Miss Jamaica World was making its debut in the friendly city and the women here weren't about to miss out on the opportunity to shine.

However, if they were missed by the cameras on arrival, the fashion onstage made up for any loss as designer Ashley Martin created waves with no less than 15 of the 25 designs that the contestants showcased. The other dresses were provided by Bling Bling. At the end of the event, eight of those pieces made it to the top 15, the first elimination process of the night.

When Gina Hargitay, the 2013 winner, was announced, only the second runner-up Amanda McCreath was wearing a Martin design, but the Jamaican designer was satisfied. Having earned the envious position of being the only local designer on the show, she was proud to know her creations sparked conversations.

The whistles started sounding and the thunderous applause could be heard when Miss Pure Country, Sheree Tomlinson, strutted down the catwalk in a sequin and tulle black studded gown.

SEXY ENSEMBLE

It continued as Miss CEEN TV, Stephanie Harrison, appeared wearing a red, goose-feathered, flowing gown accentuated with Swarovski crystals and a plunging neckline. A train at the back completed this very sexy ensemble.

With an eye for beauty, Martin did not stop there. Latoya Johnson, Miss Dunn's Electrical Lighting, donned a long, silver dress made from a special sequin, embedded with silver rhinestones; Vanassa Metzger, Miss Captain's Bakery, wore a hand-beaded, orange gown that was a hit with the audience; and Amanda McCreath, Miss Margaritaville, donned a dress that carried 100% silk at the bottom and hand-beaded Swarovski crystals at the top.
