WESTERN BUREAU:

From the popular Pier One to the posh Round Hill Hotel, venues all over the second city were jam-packed on Tuesday night as locals and foreigners came out in their numbers to welcome the new year.

With party hats and favours available all around, everyone from the very young to the old was in a celebratory mode that lasted throughout the night.

At midnight, in customary fashion, the skies over Pier One were lit up with a magnificent display of fireworks, much to the delight of hundreds of patrons who packed the downtown venue to witness the yearly spectacle.

As the kaleidoscope of sparkling colours faded, the partygoers continued to sip complimentary champagne while exchanging hugs and other pleasantries with fellow patrons.

Across town, an array of wines and champagne also flowed freely at the exclusive Round Hill Hotel, where Managing Director Josef Forstmayr and his staff went all out in ensuring that guests were fêted royally, dining in fine style, and dancing the night away to the pulsating beats of the evergreen Fab Five Band.

The popular hip strip was also abuzz with activity into the wee hours of Wednesday morning, but it was Margaritaville, with DJ Kentucky at the musical controls, which pulled the largest gathering.

With a dance floor packed to capacity, revellers brought out their best moves, signalling their intent to make 2014 a year of joy and happiness.
